He wrote 65 papers in international journals, and books. For nearly 30 years Giles taught mathematics at the University of Newcastle. With innovative curriculum design and the introduction of new topics he made significant contributions to the development of the degree course in mathematics. He was recognised as an inspiring teacher. At the University he held a number of positions in the Staff Association and the Retired Lecturers Association.
