Haring Swart was a mycologist widely respected for his rigorous and detailed research. His interests initially lay with soil fungi, later shifting to undescribed species, especially Ascomycetes, and Fungi imperfecti. He was also an accomplished artist: many of his drawings of fungi were included in his published papers. For 14 years, Swart was Lecturer in the Department of Botany at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, where he taught plant anatomy and mycology. While there he built up a culture collection containing over 400 species. On moving to Melbourne in 1966 he left behind the large collection of drawings he had used a teaching aids. Swart held the position of Senior Lecturer in mycology in the School of Botany at the University of Melbourne for over 20 years. His research increasingly focused on microfungi. He published (sometimes with co-authors) a series of 30 papers on leaf-inhabiting fungi between 1971 and 1988. Specimens of many of the species he described were lodged in the School's Herbarium. Frequently calls were made on his time to identify fungi of importance in agriculture, forestry, industry and medicine.
