Many of her illustrations were produced under her maiden name. She began her career in the USA where, after attending a short course in scientific illustration at Cornell University, she spent the period 1966 to 1970 producing drawings of taxonomic characters for The moths of America, north of Mexico. She then moved to Berlin where she painted tropical fish for the Institut für Meereskunde t the University in Kiel. From the late 1970s she was engaged in illustrating books such as Mangroves of Western Australia (1978) and Flora of the Perth region (1987). Many of the later publications of her husband Paul included illustrations by Margaret: the pair married in 1990.
