Frederick Quaife was a medical practitioner noted for being the first to use x-ray technology on Australia. He set up his Röntgen machine in the laboratory in his practice in Woollahra. A consultant at the Sydney Hospital for many years, in 1896 he provided funds for the Hospital to obtain its first x-ray machine. Between 1884 and 1889 he was Examiner in Medicine at the University of Sydney. A member of the New South Wales Medical Board, he was also a foundation member and office bearer of the New South Wales Branch of the British Medical Association. Quaife was a man of broad interests: He was active in the New South Wales Branch of the British Astronomical Society. His musical talents were evident in his membership of the Sydney Amateur Orchestral and Royal Philharmonic Societies.
