It was intended to promote mutual respect and good fellowship among members, to advance the medical profession, and to institute a benevolent fund for the use of poor and sick fellows, their widows and orphans. The drafting of a code of conduct was also on the agenda. There were 67 original members, meetings initially being held as conversazione at the home of founder James Robertson. The Association began to decline after the death of Robertson in 1862. Falling membership and attendance at meetings resulted in the disbandment of the Association in 1869.
