It was founded for the improvement and diffusion of entomological science. This was to be achieved by providing those interested in insects the opportunity to meet together, and the publication of members' papers. William J. Macleay was its first (and only) President. The Transactions of the Entomological Society of New South Wales was published in two volumes.
