Haynes Alleyne was a medical practitioner whose early, adventurous career included agricultural pursuits in New South Wales (which ended in bankruptcy) and participation in the Māori wars in New Zealand. Having completed his medical studies in Edinburgh, he returned to New South Wales in 1848. While maintaining a private practice, from 1855 he held honorary positions at the Sydney Hospital until his death. The first of his government appointments was that of Medical Officer for Port Jackson: in effect, quarantine officer, which involved medical inspection of immigrant ships and participation in efforts to control epidemic diseases including smallpox. Other appointments included membership of the Medical and Pharmacy Boards and the Board of Visitors to Lunatic Asylums. Alleyne was a founding Member of Council of the Australian Medical Association and, from 1867, Examiner in Medicine at the University of Sydney. His wider scientific pursuits included active participation in the Linnean Society of New South Wales and as a Trustee of the Australian Museum. Alleyne was noted for his knowledge of fishes.
