AACR2 1949 Start Place Myrtle Bank, Tasmania, Australia Citizen science Natural history Naturalists' society The Launceston Field Naturalists Club started in 1949 at a meeting on members of the Northern Branch of the Royal Society of Tasmania. Initially the Club's aims were to encourage the study of nature and the collection, preservation and systematic classification of specimens. These aims were later extended to include support for the conservation of our natural heritage. The Club has a program of monthly meetings and regular field trips. Myrtle Bank, a property of varying vegetation types, was bequeathed to the Club by John Skemp (Vice-President 1950 - 1966). The John Skemp Field camp is available for use by members and non-members. Approximately half of the botanical specimens needed by Margaret Stones for her work in illustrating The endemic flora of Tasmania (1967-1978) were provided by Club members. Publications produced by the Club include the Launceston naturalist, a regular newsletter that started in 1967; and Guide to flowers and plants of Tasmania , which has been issued in six editions since 1981.
