Márta Svéd became interested in mathematics through a Hungarian magazine for high school mathematicians, Középiskolai Matematikai Lapok. In 1928 she took third place in the Hungarian national high school mathematics competition and subsequently studied mathematics at the Royal Joseph University in Budapest. After teaching for several years, Svéd and her husband engineer George migrated to South Australia in 1939. Between 1942 and 1958 Sved taught mathematics and physics at the Wilderness School in Adelaide. During this time she was a founder of the first Australian high school mathematics journal. In 1959 she became tutor in mathematics at the University of Adelaide, retiring in 1975. Svéd published numerous articles in the Mathematical intelligencer, Mathematics magazine, Discrete mathematics, and Mathematics teacher. For her significant contributions to the teaching of mathematics, Svéd was awarded the B. H. Neumann Award for Excellence in Mathematics Enrichment by the Australian Mathematics Trust in 1994. The University of Adelaide offers the Márta Svéd Scholarship for women mathematics students.
