<biogHist>
The Orchid Society of New South Wales, founded in 1934, is one of the oldest such organisations in Australia. It started after several friends, who had been gathering in their homes for some years, determined that a more formal organisation was needed. Membership increased steadily after the first meeting, successively larger premises being needed for meetings. The Society provides a forum for discussion and cooperation among members and affiliated societies, of which there are over 60. It administers the judging system within the state. The Society represents New South Wales on the Australian Orchid Council. Its journal, the <span style="font-style:italic">Australian orchid review</span>, started in 1936, is now the official organ of the principal orchid society from each state.
