The Australian Orchid Council provides a national forum for cooperation and coordination among orchid societies across Australia on matters relating to the growing, showing and judging of orchids. It started in 1960, with a new constitution being adopted in 1997. Emphasis is placed on the conservation of native orchid species, and on liaison with government on relevant matters such as the convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The Council provides a point of contact with international orchid organisations. <span style="font-style:italic">Orchids Australia</span> (ISSN 1443-0614), which has been published by the Council since 1989, includes articles on any aspect of orchid growing and propagation, and articles by Australian and overseas orchid growers.
