Over subsequent years, the Association amalgamated with other organisations of professionals in the public service across engineering, communications, aviation, electronics and related areas. Further amalgamations came with the CSIRO Staff Association, and members of the deregistered State Public Services Federation. With these amalgamations came successive name changes. The Organisation in now known as the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU). To mark its 50th anniversary the Association held the conference "Horizons in science" in 1962 in Melbourne. From 1956 the Association presented the Award of Merit to members who had done outstanding work in their field.

Speakers at the 1962 conference were: Mark Oliphant, Keith Alder, Harold Raggatt, Thomas Leech, Philip Law, Robert Boswell, Francis O'Grady and Edward Bowen.
