He was elected a Senator for Tasmania from 1919 until 1938. During that period he was a Member of the Joint Committee on Public Accounts (1920-1925); Member of the Wireless Agreement Committee 1921-1922; Chairman of the Royal Commission on National Insurance 1923-1927; and was the Government Director, Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Limited.
