Florence Hill, having qualified in medicine in 1901, worked as a hospital pathologist. She also worked in a number capacities at the University of California, Berkeley, including assistant in diseases of the skin and research assistant in biochemistry. In 1923 she moved to South Australia with her two daughters. Early in her time in South Australia, the family spent time at Pataroo, the rural property of B. Hugh MacLachlan. Between 1927 and 1930 Hill was Cancer research assistant in the Department of Human Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Adelaide. Her research, on the pathogenicity of the embryonic cells in mice, resulted in the publication of several papers: her technical assistant was Miss E. Wadlow. During this time she assisted Thomas Cherry of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne in producing photographs on lymphoid growth intended for publication in the <span style="font-style:italic">Australian journal of medical science</span>. With one daughter Hill left Adelaide in September 1931 to return to the U.S. via Sydney.
