John S. D'Alton CE FIIS was engineer and secretary of the Meekatharra Road Board - the largest road district in the Commonwealth - from 1911 until his death in 1936, during which he was responsible for increasing the length of roads in the district to 2,000 miles. He also influenced the construction of the railway from Meekatharra to Wiluna, and formulated a plan for the irrigation and exploitation of the vast north west of Western Australia.

Earlier he had been the engineer and town clerk, for Northam and then for South Perth. While at Northam Council, he saw the erection of the electric power station and the Avon weir, and while at South Perth, he lobbied for the repair or replacement of the Canning Bridge.
