Ern Perkins is a naturalist who immersed himself in studies of the flora and fauna of his local area. With his wife Lesley, he is dedicated to the investigation, exploration, recording, documenting and advocacy of the natural environment. Surveys in which he has taken a key role range from birds such as the Swift Parrot and the Regent Honeyeater, to the conservation value of roadside verges, and data collection for paired quadrats used to monitor effects of controlled burns. For the Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club, Perkins prepared most of the leaflets it issued on the natural history of the district. He was also heavily involved in the publication of <span style="font-style:italic">Indigenous plants of Greater Bendigo</span> (2004) published by the City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Native Plant group. Advisory and management committees in which he has participated include the Walk and Trails Advisory Board and the Heritage Advisory Board, both of the Mt Alexander Shire. Perkins is an active member of naturalists clubs in Bendigo, Castlemaine and Benalla, and the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria. Perkins has received a number of awards for his work, including Honorary Life membership of the Australian Plant Society Victoria in 2000 and the Australian Natural History Medallion in 2003.
