William Weymouth worked as an insurance assessor for the National Mutual Insurance Company in Tasmania, but is generally known as one of the earliest people to study Tasmanian mosses and lichens. His interest began when he started collecting in 1887. He developed strong ties with leading European bryologists, including Antonio Jatta in Italy, Viktor Brotherus in Finland, and Franz Stephani in Germany, when he sent them specimens to be identified. Weymouth published several papers on Tasmanian mosses in the 1890s. Many of his bryophyte collections are in the Tasmanian Herbarium, while the National Herbarium of Victoria holds over 500 specimens. The moss genus <span style="font-style:italic">Weymouthia</span> was named in his honour.
