It was founded in Cairns, Queensland in 1932, one of its principal advocates and first President being Hugo Flecker. Membership came from a wide cross-section of the community in Cairns and surrounding areas. The Club's early interests broadly included nature study, conservation for utility or as a social duty, scientific collecting, community education, and national parks. Some issues of concern included the problems caused by uncontrolled fires in country surrounding Cairns, introduced animals, and soil erosion, and the protection of coral reefs. The Club's herbarium, instituted in its early years, comprised over 10,000 specimens when it was donated in 1971 to CSIRO's Australian Tropical Herbarium.
