He was also a noted botanist who collected specimens in Western Australia and New South Wales. His collection of over 15,000 plants, which included some collected by his daughter Gwenda Davis, was donated to the National Herbarium of New South Wales in 1952. Some of Frederick's Western Australian collections are also present in the herbarium of Leonard Rodway, his father, now in the Tasmanian Herbarium.
