Membership includes medical specialists, researchers, clinical practitioners and students. The Society promotes the highest quality and standards of patient care; development and application of knowledge about respiratory health and disease; standards for air quality, including a tobacco-smoke-free society and effective regulation of nicotine delivery systems; and the professional and collegiate needs of the membership. Branches exist for all states and New Zealand. Special interest groups include those for specific diseases (e.g. cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), evidence-based medicine and practice, patient care, and tobacco and related substances. Awards are presented by the Society to recognise excellence in fields other than research, such as the advancement of practice of thoracic medicine (the Society Medal), and outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in respiratory medicine or science carried out in Australia or New Zealand (the Research Medal).
