She was largely responsible for establishing the College's Department of Botany. Her research during her early years was on the taxonomy of endemic species of Australian Asteraceae, including the genera Calotis and Podolepis. After a fire in 1958 destroyed the building which housed the Department, Davis turned her attention to the plant embryology, particularly of Asteraceae and Eucalyptus. Her book Systematic embryology of angiosperms (1966) was a standard reference work for many years. Davis retired in 1971 as Associate Professor of Botany of the University of New England (the successor of the New England University College).
