He was Commissioner for Fuel and Power with the Western Australian Government from 1973, then Commissioner of the State Energy Commission of WA from 1975 until he retired in 1987. His earlier extensive engineering career was with the Electricity Commission of New South Wales from 1957 to 1973, where he rose to Assistant Chief Engineer Power Design. He had a substantial involvement in professional activities associated with energy-related industries: as president of the Electricity Supply Association of Australia; as chairman of the Australian National Committee of the World Energy Conference; as a Member of the Task Force on Energy; and as foundation chairman of the National Energy Research, Development and Demonstration Council.
