Ebsary, with paediatric surgeon Douglas Cohen and anaesthetist Dr Victor Hercus, successfully designed and built the first heart-lung machine in Sydney, that radically changed paediatric cardiac surgery. He also made portable anaesthetic machines, hypothermia machines, respiratory intensive care units, and other medical equipment including implants, devices for correcting spinal deformities, and chair-lift appliances. The registered company he established as V R Ebsary & Co in 1932, was changed to Ebsray Pumps Pty Limited in 1947, and the ongoing development and success of Ebsray Pumps has further enabled other technological developments in both industrial and medical fields.
