His first job from 1922 to 1926 was Engineer in Charge of grain elevator construction with the NSW Department of Agriculture, and this had a major and continuing influence on his career. From the early 1950s, Wagner gradually became the driving force in the practice as Macdonald's ill-health restricted his involvement, and in 1955, after Macdonald's death, became the senior partner. Over the next 20 years Wagner guided the company's expansion to enable it to become a major multi-disciplinary Australian and international engineering consultancy.
