<biogHist>
<abstract>Arthur a'Beckett was a medical practitioner who became a leading surgeon in Sydney. Following the lead of several of his brothers (all legal practitioners), he migrated to New South Wales, arriving in 1838. He established a private medical practice, and held appointments with the Benevolent Asylum and the AMP Society. a'Beckett's involvements in community organisations included as President of the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts from 1852 to 1854, and Trustee of the Australian Museum. In 1856 he was became a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. His appointment in 1856 as Examiner in Medicine in the new medical school at the University of Sydney ceased in 1863 when he visited the United Kingdom. On returning to Sydney two years later he resumed his private medical practice.</abstract>
