In 1943 Mawson became Assistant Bacteriologist at the South Australian Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science. Several of her papers reported on the transmission of viral diseases. In 1944 she married Peter McEwin and they established 'Myrtle Bank', a sheep farm in the Hindmarsh Valley.
