Madeline Angel was a much-respected expert on Australia's Trematoda (parasitic flukes). After completing her MSc at the University of Adelaide, she taught for over 30 years at the University, while undertaking her research on animal parasites. Her masters thesis was on the morphology of an aquatic endoproct (phylum Endoprocta) from Macquarie island. In her research on trematodes, she collaborated with others eminent in the field, including Patricia Mawson , T. Harvey Johnston and John Pearson. The species <span style="font-style:italic">Retrobulla angelae</span> (Cryptogonimidae) was named in her honour. During WII Angel served as a pathologist with the Australian Army Medical Corps, being posted to the 101 Australian General Hospital (AGH), the Australian Army Medical Women's Service, and the Australian Outpatients Department in New South Wales. She was a member of both the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom and the Malacological Society of Australia.
