Cecil Tilley was a dominant figure in modern metamorphic and igneous petrology, recognised internationally. He published extensively and discovered and described a number of new minerals. His early research was based on the metamorphic rocks from the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, but after studying petrology at the University of Cambridge he continued his research in the Great Britain. He influenced the teaching of geology in Australia through his extended visits, when he encouraged young Australians to undertake postgraduate studies abroad and return to academic positions in Australia.
