Stirling Smeaton, having graduated in Arts from the University of Adelaide, worked for the South Australian Railways for seven years. In his subsequent career he was employed on railway contracts in South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia. He later became a surveyor and draughtsman for the South Australian public service. In the late 1890s Smeaton was Chairman of the Field Naturalists' Section of the Royal Society of South Australia.

His engineer, polymath father, Thomas Drury Smeaton, was the founder of the Adelaide Philosophical Society, the forerunner of the Royal Society of South Australia.
