<biogHist>
<abstract>Sylvanus Magarey was a leading medical practitioner in Adelaide from the 1870s. His principal medical interest was the health of children. In 1878 he joined Allan Campbell as medical officer at the Adelaide Children's Hospital. With Campbell he also was connected with the Adelaide Homeopathic Dispensary. Maragey's other interests included women's' suffrage (he was a foundation Councillor of the Women's Suffrage League) and temperance, He advocated on both issues during his time as a member of the South Australian Parliament. For some years he was held office as Secretary and President of the South Australian Temperance Alliance. Magarey was also an active member of the Field naturalists' Club of South Australia with a keen interest in sea shells.</abstract>
