Official notice of its acceptance as a Branch was received from the BMA the following year. Purposes of the Branch included the advancement of medical and surgical science, discussion of original papers, and the demonstration of interesting cases and of pathological specimens. Among the Branch's early achievements was to host the first Intercolonial Medical Congress in1887. In 1893 Laura Fowler was the first woman to be admitted to membership of the Branch, thereby setting a precedent for other Branches. Sections were established in rural areas to overcome difficulties caused by remoteness. Specialist sections were also set up. In 1962 the Branch joined with other state Branches to form the Australian Medical Association, while continuing as a Branch of the new federal organisation.
