It replaced the Colonial infirmary and was the first built-for-purpose hospital in South Australia. The Hospital's first operating theatre opened In 1891, followed by x-ray services from 1899. In 1939 the name was changed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. It is the teaching hospital for medical and dental students in conjunction with the University of Adelaide.
