Laura Fowler was the first woman to graduate in medicine from the University of Adelaide. Born into a liberal-minded Baptist family, Fowler was educated in Australia, England and Germany. On graduating she worked for one year as Resident Medical Officer at the Adelaide Children's Hospital. Her application to join the local branch of the British Medical Association was 'the immediate cause' of the admission of women. In 1893 Fowler married fellow doctor, Charles H. S. Hope, They worked as self-supporting missionaries in India for over 30 years with intermittent periods of medical service back home and, during WWI, in the United Kingdom and Serbia. The couple retired to Adelaide in 1934.
