Hartley Ferrar was a new graduate in geology from the University of Cambridge when in 1901 he was invited to become geologist on the British National Antarctic Expedition. During the Expedition he also assumed responsibility for sea-water analysis. He participated in a number of sledging parties, including into Western Mountains of Victoria Land. Among his many geological samples was the first fossil found in Antarctica. Other discoveries including evidence of the presence of coal. After the expedition Ferrar joined the Geological Survey of Egypt where he made the first extensive survey of the western desert and became interested in the effect of irrigation on soils. In 1919 he became a geologist with the New Zealand Geological Survey, being Acting Director at the time of his death. Ferrar Glacier, Victoria Land Antarctica, and Ferrar Peak, South Island, New Zealand, were named in his honour.
