Its responsibilities included: agricultural, pastoral, fishing, forest, mineral and energy industries, and electricity; water and other natural resources; primary industries inspection, quarantine, and research including geoscience; commodity marketing and oversight; administration of export controls on primary industries and energy products, and radioactive waste management. In 1998 the Department was succeeded by the Departments of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and Industry, Science and Resources.
