He was the inaugural Director, Western Australian Maritime Museum between 1992 and 2005. Henderson has worked on the discovery, investigation and preservation of wrecks around Australia, particularly in Western Australia and in the Fremantle area. Wrecks on which he worked include H.M.S. Sirius (Norfolk Island), Sydney Cove (Tasmania), H.M.S. Pandora (Great Barrier Reef), and Vergulde Draeck (Western Australia). Henderson was a founding member of the Australian Association for Maritime History, serving as Vice-President in the 1980s. He was also President of the Australian Institute for Maritime Archaeology during the 1990s, and as Chairman of its Special Projects Group was responsible for the publication of Guidelines for the management of Australia's shipwrecks (1994).
