He published on a wide range of subjects besides Australian maritime history, including global shipping, the Indian Ocean, and ports. Among the many organisations in which he was involved were the Maritime Archaeology Advisory Committee on shipwreck legislation and the Research Council of the Australian Institute of Maritime Archaeology. He was a founding Member of the Australian Association for Maritime History, being President 1983 - 1985), and President of the International Commission of Maritime History 1990 - 1995. For some years he was Deputy Chairman of the Western Australian Maritime Museum.
