This includes biography, archaeology, maritime industries, and ships. Membership is not restricted to Australia. The Association conducts lectures and conferences, and promotes the identification and preservation of records. Publications of the Association include a newsletter, first issued in 1980, and The great circle (0156-8698), a peer-reviewed journal that has been published twice per year since 1979. The Frank Broeze Memorial Maritime History Book Prize, usually presented in alternate years and co-sponsored by the Association with the Australian maritime Museum, is awarded to books which address any aspect of maritime history relating to or impacting on Australia and the Australian Community.
