In 1978 he co-founded the Australian Association for Maritime History, going on to be Editor of the Association's journal, The great circle between 1988 and 1999. He was elected an Honorary Life Member in 1998. He was also a founding member of the Australian Forest History Society. For some years Henning was Editor of the Journal of Australasian mining history. In 1996 he was elected to represent Australia on the International Commission for Maritime History (ICMH), and served as President of the Commission from 2005 to 2016. Henning joined the University of New England in 1973 where he taught economic history for 40 years.
