His early work was on curved and spiral-shaped members of the 'normal microflora' (now known as microbiota). He made significant contributions to understanding how gastric acid contributes to pathology. Lee was the first to culture Helicobacter pylori, now recognised as a major cause of gastric ulceration, and contributed to the pioneering work of Barry Marshall and Robin Warren.
