His early research was in continental drift. With colleague Edward Irving he determined the "polar wandering" path of Australia from Early Proterozoic times to the Late Tertiary, a concept at variance with current theories but later accepted. After lecturing in geophysics at the University of Tasmania for six years, Green was appointed Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales where he was tasked with setting up the Department of Geophysics. His priorities were directed towards producing graduates who were problem-solvers, conversant equally in geology, physics and mathematics. His Department was the first in Australia to encompass global geophysics, with special emphasis on applied aspects. During this time the Geophysical Research Institute was established to facilitate collaboration between industry and the University to advance exploration technologies. In 1983 Green's Department was combined with that of geology to form the Department of Earth Sciences.
