Henry Ward, after studying and travelling in Europe, the Middle East, West Africa and the West Indies, was a professor at the University of Rochester, New York 1860-1865. He established "Ward's Natural Science", a pioneering enterprise that collected natural history specimens from all parts of the world for sale to colleges and museums. He visited Australia in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition (1880-1881) bringing with him a substantial collection which was sold to museums in New South Wales and Victoria. He then travelled the eastern colonies of Australia soliciting specimens for his collection in Rochester. His trade included ancestral remains and death masks.
