<biogHist>
<abstract>Frederick James was an organic chemist whose research focused on heterocyclic chemistry. After completing his Associate Diploma of Applied Chemistry he went on to further study and industrial experience in a laboratory to achieve the Fellowship Diploma of Applied Chemistry. In 1954 he joined the Department of Applied Chemistry at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology as Lecturer. On being appointed Head of the Department he took steps (successfully) to establish a research program in the Department. He was Head of the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences 1973 - 1977, becoming Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences ion 1977. James was a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and served both on council and on the committee investigating qualifications for membership of the Institute. In retirement James served for three years on the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation.</abstract>
