David Holmes was one of Australia's most well-known entomological collectors. His first specimen, collected in New Guinea during WWII, was the start of a 70-year interest in butterflies and moths. He collected throughout the eastern parts of Australia, particularly around Red Hill and Dromana on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. His was the largest private collection in Australia. It included specimens he bought or traded with overseas collectors, and those given to him by friends such as Archie May. During the 1990s Holmes gave to the Museum of Victoria over 24,000 meticulously documented specimens of moths and butterflies. Further donations were made until a few years before his death. Many of his specimens were used in Museum exhibitions. Holmes was a long-time member and officer-bearer of the Entomological Society of Victoria. In 2022 he was made an Honorary member.
