He joined IBM in 1959 and for the next 20 years worked in marketing, software development and increasingly senior management roles in the U.S.A., and southern and southeast Asia. In 1980 be became Managing Director of IBM Australia and, after retiring, Chairman of the company for a further five years. Finn had a long-term interest in education. In 1992 he chaired the Australian Education Council Review Committee on Young People's Participation in Post-compulsory Education and Training, which had a significant impact on the development of education in Australia. He served a term as Chairman of the Australian National Training Authority and established the Business Council of Australia's Education and Training Committee.
