He was adept at bringing together potential partners and funding to support such projects. In doing so he played a major role in advancing geophysics in Australia and internationally. His early career was as a geologist and geophysicist with Australian Anglo-American Corporation and Comalco Aluminium before joining the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) in 1989. He was Managing Director from 2012 to 2019. Major projects in which he was involved included the Cooperative Research Centre for Australian Mineral Exploration Technologies (CRCAMET) centred at Macquarie and Curtin Universities (1992 - 2000), and the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC based at Adelaide University (2010 - 2018). These CRCs were centres of major geophysical research and graduate-level teaching.
