The IEC National Committee of Australia, formerly the Australian Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission, works through Standards Australia, to help make electrical and electronic technologies safer, secure, more efficient and reliable, and to enhance international trade and cooperation.
<p>The International Electrotechnical Commission was founded in London in June 1906, with Alexander Siemens as Chair. Lord Kelvin was elected the first president.</p>
<p>It followed on from the International Electrical Congress convened at the World's Fair in St. Louis in 1904, where the exhibits used electricity of numerous different voltages, direct current or 1, 2, or 3 phase alternating current, with many different frequencies as well as a variety of connectors and plugs. At the Congress, a permanent international commission was proposed, charged with establishing the terms and measurements for ratings of electrical apparatus and machines.</p>
