Located in the Mount Lofty Ranges, it is a cool-climate garden, the idea for such a garden having first been mooted in 1911. Land was purchased in 1958 and the Garden was opened to the public in 1977. The Garden showcases plants from temperate regions, including New Zealand, China and the Himalayas, New Guinea and Australia. Special collections include rhododendrons, flowering cherries and a fern gully. Much of the original planning was the work of Noel Lothian, Director of the ABG 1948 - 1980. The Garden was damaged in severe bushfires in 1983. Since then there have been continued efforts to restore and upgrade the Garden.
