<biogHist>
Richard Fowler was an agricultural scientist whose career started in 1931 with the Victorian Department of Agriculture. His research was the investigation of soil physics and chemistry as they related to plant nutrition. In 1936 he joined the Industrial and Technological Museum as Botanical Assistant, ultimately becoming Director of the Museum's successor, the Institute of Applied Science (later the Science Museum of Victoria). Returning to the Museum after war service engaged in explosives research, Fowler became involved in new display and restoration techniques. As Director his main concerns were a rapidly expanding collection and a critical shortage of space. Fowler retired in 1975.
