Serena Dipierro is a mathematician whose research focuses on the area of analysis and PDEs, with a special focus on the theory of nonlocal operators and free boundary problems. With co-authors she has published influential and groundbreaking papers on: the existence of concentrating solutions for nonlinear and nonlocal equations of Schrödinger type; the solution to a long-standing problem by proving the Lipschitz regularity of minimisers for a two-phase free boundary variational problem; proof that fractional harmonic functions are locally dense in the space of smooth functions; and the unexpected behaviour of nonlocal minimal surfaces at their boundary. Dipierro is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Western Australia, and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. She has been a Member of Council of the Australian Mathematical Society and is Secretary of the Women in Mathematics Special Interest Group.
<p>"After moving to Australia, first to the University of Melbourne and then to the University of Western Australia, Professor Serena Dipierro has significantly contributed to several fields in mathematical analysis, partial differential equations, nonlocal equations and free boundary problems. A characteristic treat in Professor Dipierro's research consists in the fine analysis of the special patterns created by the interplay between nonlinear and nonlocal structures, also in light of motivations coming from biology and physics. Her works established the regularity properties and the geometric features of the interfaces arising from phase transitions, with special attention to the brand-new, and often very surprising, phenomena produced by far-away particle interactions and by the energy contributions 'coming from infinity'. Her findings comprise the solution to challenging problems and the opening of brand-new lines of research, which will remain as a solid source of inspiration for future investigations on a number of emerging topics" [from https://www.science.org.au/supporting-science/awards-and-opportunities-2/honorific-awardees/2024-awardees#heyde-dipierro 25/6/2024]</p>
